A tune in 7/4 trending is cool. Even when the snare& #39;s too loud which kills the groove, the more complex rhythms feel disjointed rather than stimulating.. Anything that& #39;s trying something different and going viral is cool. Just opens doors. That said I really don& #39;t like the tune.
This time, me expressing my opinions about something I don& #39;t like is actually because people asked me about my opinion. Well here is is. It doesn& #39;t groove. I hate those loud snares anyway, but in a 7/4 these strong accents need to be placed very well to keep a groove going.
I hope the higher metallic melody is just a joke. Maybe that& #39;s why people react to it, because it doesn& #39;t make sense? I love irregular rhythms but only if they make sense (or occasionally when they& #39;re meant to surprise you for a moment in an otherwise organised composition).
The trick in irregular rhythms (7/4 is not a polyrhythm!!) is building a groove that still makes sense. I& #39;ll give some examples of my own attempts. Here& #39;s one in 5/4, War Dance from my score for Sleeping Beauty Dreams https://soundcloud.com/iamthys/sets/music-from-sleeping-beauty">https://soundcloud.com/iamthys/s...
Here& #39;s another one in 5/4 from the same album, this one a bit more chilled out. https://soundcloud.com/iamthys/wingless-flight?in=iamthys/sets/music-from-sleeping-beauty">https://soundcloud.com/iamthys/w...
