This underscores why the messaging about opening up too soon needs to be much better https://twitter.com/stoolpresidente/status/1260721488241418240">https://twitter.com/stoolpres...
Hospital capacity is still a priority. Learning more about the virus is still a priority. States with a high positive test %, states hiding data, states peaking in daily cases but STILL OPENING is a problem.
It also needs to be addressed how damaging that IHME projection of 60,000 deaths was. The US reached 1000 deaths 7 weeks ago, and since then ~84,000 more (that we know of) have died of COVID; that’s 1700 deaths per day
If that rate stays the same the rest of the year, that’s an additional 396,000 deaths (on top of 85,000)

Call it fear-mongering, but if you’re gonna open up the country too soon, and the government already had studies talking about 3K deaths/day soon... it’s realistic
And I’ll say it again: THERE IS AN IMMENSE AMOUNT OF EXCESS DEATH OCCURRING

Even if we’re undercounting cases by a factor of 10, we could be undercounting deaths by up to 20% (based on the report about excess death in NYC)
So yes, MAYBE the virus is not as deadly if we’re undercounting cases that much, but flattening the curve does not equal controlling the spread. Most countries of means have controlled the spread.
We’re at a point where on a national level (note, not local/regional), things are plateauing, which isn’t good. It means you’re very prone for an outbreak if you re-open too soon (that’s what the science says)
It also means normalization of death is occurring, death at a fairly significant level tied to something we can control if we work together. This isn’t the same as the seasonal flu or car crashes.
I understand living the argument being made in terms of living with the risk of this virus being around, but it’s irresponsible. That’s a discussion you have when the first wave is over... and it ain’t over here
Testing still needs to increase, contact tracing needs to increase
If you look back at history, say, idk, 1918 during the Spanish Flu pandemic, you’ll see striking parallels.

You’ll also notice things like masks and social distancing didn’t last forever... it doesn’t have to if we act vigilant now
If you want to look at this like a war (like POTUS treats it), then in a war, everyone unifies under the threat of a common enemy and does what is necessary to win

Doubting science and public health experts & acting in defiance of them in the name of freedom is a losing strategy
Trust the doctors, trust the scientists, trust the experts. Your gov’t pushing you back to work is the same gov’t that could be making this shutdown just a BIT easier, but is failing to do so

You shouldn’t have to risk your life to save the economy when they couldn’t help you
