For all those arguing/believing that hospitals (or whatever agents your are blaming) are going back to change the cause of death on death certificates to elevate the number of deaths related to #COVID19, let me explain the death certificate process since many are confused how...
...that happens and who signs it.
1. All Americans need to have a signed death certificate in order to be buried or cremated.
2. The cause of death is certified by a doctor or coroner: not an EMT, nurse, hospital, or whoever you believe may be signing these things.
2/
3. Certain criteria exists that mandate an autopsy, such as unexplained or suspicious death.
4. If the patient dies in the hospital, the attending physician treating the patient signs the death certificate.
5. If the patient dies at home or in a community setting, ...
3/
...the primary care doctor signs the death certificiate.
6. We're asked to sign the immediate cause of death as well as contributing diagnoses to a reason degree of certitude.
7. If we cannot certify the cause of death, the case goes to the corner and an autopsy may be needed. 4/
8. Once the body is buried or cremated, it is near impossible to change a death certificate. This happens only in extreme cases when new facts appear and most likely requires a court order to re-examine the body.
9. There are no hospitals or others going around changing...
5/
...cause of death on previous death certificates.
10. Again, only doctors or the coroner can certify cause of death.
11. Please stop making up facts that don't exist and make no sense in the real world. Thank you and stay safe!
