1) As promised, here's my response to @francoislegault’s criticism of my coverage of the #pandemic. I’ve been on the health beat for more than 21 years. During this time, I’ve covered many health ministers, including the Premier himself when he served in that portfolio in 2003.
2) Over the years, a number of health ministers have criticized my reporting. I remember taking a stroll one night with @phcouillard in Baltimore many years ago when he was health minister. He told me he didn’t like some of my coverage, either.
3) Regardless of which political party has been in power — Coalition Avenir Québec, Liberal or Parti Québécois — I have always striven to report fairly and based on the facts. When I have erred, I have corrected my mistakes.
4) I readily concede that my reporting raises tough questions, including during this #pandemic. Therefore, I should be ready to accept being challenged by the Premier. On that score, I will not shun any criticism.
5) I’m pleased the Premier has been reading my coverage. However, it is regrettable for @francoislegault to say today that “I don't see why the result is not the same for Francophones and Anglophones. I guess maybe The Gazette has a certain responsibility.”
6) This isn't a language issue. It’s a public health issue of paramount concern. Many Québécois et Québécoise are turning to my coverage, along with the reports of my colleagues, because they want facts, context and explanations at a time when some key information is lacking.
7) As for the survey results that prompted the Premier’s answer, I don’t want to speculate on the differences between French-speaking and English-speaking Montrealers. We are all being affected by this horrible #pandemic.
8) Tonight, 2,063 people have died from #COVID19 in Montreal. The dark blue line in the chart below shows sharp fluctuations in the number of deaths reported each day, suggesting that the mortality rate has yet decline in the city.
9) Meanwhile, the orange line in the chart below would appear to indicate a dropping-off of #COVID cases. But that’s likely to climb back up with more testing. Pour ceux et celles qui ont suivi ma couverture, merci pour votre appui! Thanks everyone for the support!
10) One last tweet. You can read my latest column — about the apparently improbably connection between the Diamond Princess and Quebec’s CHSLDs — early tomorrow morning in the @mtlgazette. End of thread. Goodnight, everyone!
