May we never allow a critique of “progressive fundamentalism” to erase the very real voices and experiences of those at the margins.
OF COURSE people raised and conditioned in religious or social fundamentalism can map new beliefs onto the old framework. Of course that can create echo chambers and a lack of self reflection or examination.
But, y’all, do NOT let your frustration with “progressive fundamentalism” or “the left eating itself” turn you into the white moderate Dr. King wrote about.
I have seen a lot of white men (and some women) discussing the tone of a discussion that does not impact their lives. They lecture survivors on how to handle “allies.”
Fellow allies! Managing our feelings is OUR WORK! We do this work to enjoy real relationship with others. We do this work so we can partner in making a more equitable society. That goal is worth the hard work on the self.
People who have called me out in the past are today some of my dearest friends. Change is possible. Let’s join together and make a better world—and let’s start by trusting and honor people’s experiences. Especially at the margins.
