Ok, this is my first attempt at a legitimate thread so please bear with me, when I’m finished I’ll say I’m finished. I saw this article popping up in my timeline and automatically got frustrated and offended. https://pagesix.com/2020/05/12/dakota-johnson-says-her-depression-is-beautiful/
But Page6 had already burned me once with Hilarie Morgan so I decided to read the article and see if there was any substance to it that might have been misconstrued. If there is any rectifying argument to be made they completely left it out.
I have been struggling with depression most of my life like a lot of people who spoke out. It’s not “beautiful” and you do not “feel the world”. The fact is that I and a lot of people who are depressed do not “feel the world” it’s feels more like we have no place in it.
But, maybe Marie Claire was trying to express her own depression I her own way... not that I could see. It was an article about her “directorial debut” for Coldplay’s new song “Cry Cry Cry” and I assume her depression helped her write the story board for the music video.
(Which her boyfriend who is the frontman of Coldplay picked for his video “not because he was partial to (her) in anyway”)
So I decided to watch the music video. My take away is that the video on it’s own visual merit is a cheap knock off of Hozier’s “Work Song” I have liked several Coldplay songs so this isn’t about whether Hozier is a better musician or anything like that.
I’m not a musician, I can’t say. All I know is what moved me more and what I felt was true dealing with depression and longing for someone to connect to and accept you and help you.
Here is Coldplay’s music video.
And here is Hozier’s.
In my experience, depression is not beautiful. It’s does not help you feel the world, it makes you feel like alienated from it and like you’re alone and like you don’t deserve to be a part of it. It makes you feel selfish and weak.
And that is how is gains power over you and encompasses your entire world and makes you feel like you don’t deserve to be happy.

Depression is not beautiful.

I’m finished.
