This is a major development. Gleeson was a widely respected judge with no patience for destroying the DOJ.

This is akin to Judge Sullivan appointing a special prosecutor independent of the DOJ.
I imagine Gleeson will hew closely to his assignment, but there is a possibility it could lead him to investigate more deeply.
