Ok this is my basic thread on the information I’ve acquired about #COVID19 and pregnancy! I’m a current L&D nurse & midwifery student. I’m definitely not an expert, but this is information I think it’s important for the general public & pregnant folks to have access to.
Before I get started, if you enjoy this thread pls feel free to follow my pregnancy/midwifery/doula page @/perinatalnyc on Instagram! You can find more information on pregnancy there!
COVID-19 and pregnancy is super complicated and doctors have not figured everything out at *all*. What we have seen, is that many people are asymptomatic and are only realizing that they are positive when tested upon admission to L&D. Some remain asymptomatic their entire stay.
Others have really, really difficult courses and their symptoms are exacerbated during their delivery. We don’t have a direct correlation but we’ve seen a lot more miscarriages, IUFDs & poor fetal outcomes lately and we all wonder if it’s COVID related.
A positive test result doesn’t automatically mean a longer hospital stay! Most hospitals are discharging postpartum folks early because a hospital during a pandemic is not the place for a newborn baby. The less possible interactions with disease vectors, the better.
If you are positive and you are asymptomatic you can go home just like everyone else! As long as you are oxygenating well & are breathing ok you are safe to go home, as long as you keep track of your symptoms and inform the people in your household.
Separating positive parents and newborn babies is not recommended!!!! Bonding during the first few days of life is a crucial part of newborn development and breastfeeding success. You can still breastfeed and/or bond, as long as you wear a mask and wash your hands.
If you know you’re coming into a hospital for an induction or a scheduled c/s try and be as prepared as possible. I have an IG post on that here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B_qNh0LpJFU/?igshid=8q124n611nyi
Like I said before, the effects of #COVID19 on #pregnancy and #newborns is still being figured out, but I’ve seen a lot of misinformation on twitter so that’s my lil informational rant. Other birth workers feel free to comment and add things! Other ppl feel free to ask questions!
