Thank you, @GaylyDreadful, for writing this.

I’m sure Bloom is a nice person who treats the people in his life very well. He knows a lot about film and seems to genuinely care about overlooked art and artists.

But... (1/10) (sorry for thread) https://twitter.com/gaylydreadful/status/1260686714743541762
From 2011-2019, JBB wrote for Taki—founded by a man who has written multiple columns praising Golden Dawn, the Greek Nazi political party.

Richard Spencer was an executive editor (2008-2009). Gavin McInnes wrote for Taki from 2007-2017.

In his first post for Rebeller, Bloom addressed the controversy...but not quite.

He said he didn’t know what the site’s politics were just that he had total freedom and the logo was martini glass. Plus Taki commenters often found him TOO liberal.

But this was brought up to him multiple times and you’d think bylines by Coulter, Pat Buchanan, and Tucker Carlson next to his op-eds would have led him to inquire.

But in that Rebeller post, Bloom writes he didn’t denounce any of them because he isn’t a political party. (4/10)
But he did disavow another writer—in one of his posts Fangoria. He took exception to Joe Lipsett’s article about the 2019 BLACK CHRISTMAS backlash (which was tied to a tweet from JBB).

He didn’t denounce Golden Dawn, but he finds critiques of his views offensive? (5/10)
This isn’t saying Bloom is a Nazi, should be canceled, or is Absolute Bad.

I own books by him and have seen him Live twice. He knows a ton, helps proselytize for forgotten art/artists, appears to truly care about many people, and by all accounts he’s very pleasant. (6/10)
But while the JBB persona was always meant as a juxtaposition of encyclopedic knowledge with a redneck caricature, there is something off when a scholarly skeptic like Bloom pleads ignorance around specific topics that don’t reflect well on him. (7/10)
Most fans don’t know about Taki (even when his newsletter was sending out those posts). I didn’t until late 2019.

Meanwhile, his Shudder shows/specials were actual appointment viewing that helped foster a sense of community through shared (but separate) experiences. (8/10)
I get why fans say “it’s just a bit” or decry people’s sensitivity. He’s done Good for and shown love to the horror community—who often feel marginalized.

But he’s also been aligned with Bad and used his soapbox to make other groups feel even further marginalized. (9/10)
I’m not calling for JBB to be canceled.

I’m asking him to please have a real conversation where he truly listens to people hurt by his words & actions, and he provides honest answers so everyone at least understands each other and can make their choices accordingly. (10/10)
PS (sorry): my opinions are my own, they don’t reflect anyone/anything else.

Similarly, this is in no way meant to reflect on anyone that works with him/Shudder/Fangoria, etc. This isn’t even meant to indict JBB—it’s trying to move forward. I’m asking for clarity, not censorship
