So I've done a LOT of thinking about Coach Painter's interview today and I have some takes.
2. Calling this a "rant" is completely wrong. Coach is laid back, well-spoken, and insightful. It's very clear Coach wants the best for his players, and that he's seen more of them than any of us peons.
3. Painter discussed both players' pro aspirations, noting both how rarely transfers get drafted in the NBA and how hard it is to get paid to play basketball at the highest level. He then mentions Swanigan and Carsen, and how both of them had inedible work ethic to get there.
4. He's completely right that you have to be really good to get to the NBA. "It's really hard to be good." He mentions how hard you have to work hard to get there.
5. Then there's the infamous quote taken out of context and got all the hoes mad. "If you graduate but leave, you're not a Boilermaker." Here goes on to talk about how guys have had issues with their role for decades, and plenty put in the work and got better for it.
6. Ultimately I think Painter respects their decisions but is disappointed they aren't giving it another go with him. Painter expressed multiple times how much he loves both guys and wants them to succeed. I also don't think he's wrong that both sides have pros and cons in this.
7. Painter is very disappointed things didn't work out in the end. He defended at length about the struggles Haarms in particular went though last year, mentioning injuries, etc.
8. However, Coach does mention that he thinks that the transfer bug is symptomatic of a larger problem. Sometimes moving on is the right thing, but sometimes you won't be able to handle adversity by running away from it. Very true.
9. So in conclusion, this was not a 30 minute rant of thinly veiled shots at Eastern and Haarms. He spent most of the interview talking about the broader topics of what it takes to be a pro and that sometimes adversity needs to be faced head on.
10. Coach seemed very disheartened that they're leaving. Sounds like it was his opinion that it wasn't in their best interests, and yeah, that happens.
11. But now we get into the beefy part of this, because there are SOME fanbases (cough cough MSU) who didn't listen to the interview and just spouted off terrible hot takes. The response from some Purdue fans that was... Not great. At all.
12. Y'all, please don't jump to takes like "MSU rape culture" and shit when you see these bad takes. You've lost the argument by not refuting their bad takes.
13. Like, seriously, that's not good.
14. In addition, some Sparty fans need to get a grip when it comes to Coach Painter. It's weird as hell how you act like Purdue is beneath you yet go after them with such vitriol before the dummies get there with the stupid rape accusations.
15. I know quarantine and no sports has us going bonkers, but please, this kind of toxicity needs to stop. Purdue fans and MSU fans are way more alike than some of you may realize. But that's a story for another time.
16. So don't be stupid about this. None of you make yourself look good by engaging in these bad faith arguments.
