Was it just me?

As a kid when I played Halo CE, 2 & 3, i'd get REALLY attached to the friendly AI (Marines, Elites) that followed you around throughout the game.
To the point where if a friendly marine gets killed, i'd restart the checkpoint, without hesitation. Restart.

Because god dammit we traded guns earlier in the level okay and he said a funny line and we were best buddies ever since!
There were so many times where the AI felt like it made a difference back then too.

Whether it was a marine riding shotgun with a rocket launcher, or when the Hunters fought alongside you (the Arbiter) to battle the Brutes across the bridge in Halo 2!
Or simply if you choose to save the life of the UNSC marine in Sierra 117 in Halo 3 you are rewarded with some cool dialogue and a fresh ally who helps you out.
I miss this in modern games. I don't see this in video games anymore, and if it is included (which is rare) it barely has anything close to the charm of those NPCs of old and their funny voice lines!
