For the folks suggesting to high school graduates to go to community college if universities go online in the fall just because it’s cheaper falls so short of reasons why they should go to community college and low key classist. It’s not just a matter of affordability, CC’s are
academically rigorous but at a slower pace than normal universities. Meaning students have more time to find out what they actually want to invest the rest of their years to. They are more diverse in age and backgrounds so their experience is more rich and meaningful.
Don’t downplay the worth of getting a community college education before university to just affordability. If anything folks should be demanding that universities ARE affordable and uphold humane educational practices during covid-19.
I’m a CC transfer and whenever I hear “that’s so smart, it’s much cheaper than here” downplays all the enriching things I gained from CC that a 4 year would have ever given me. Let’s be nuanced in our approach when giving advice to HS youth trying to figure this all out.
Let’s not forget the many struggles of community college 😳👀👀 the lack of resources that often leave students disappointed and push them to drop out. Each person should take into account their income, financial aid resources, family responsibilities etc.before making a choice.
End rant. Back to my final essay đŸ„”
