Going through Egyptian ‘reformist’ Mahmud Abu Rayyah’s book, which was entirely dedicated against Abū Hurayrah, was quite a disappointment.

You seriously expect to find (at least) some degree of nuance in these sources, but you end up realizing they’re total crap.
The book essentially is built on some exaggerated sense of self-righteousness, where the author pretentiously attempts to elicit outrage in the reader towards Abu Hurayrah.

-Abu Hurayrah accepted Islam when he was poor?

“That’s because he was bumming its social welfare system”
-The poor & needy accepted Islam because they hoped that the Prophet would rid them of the oppressive social hierarchies that regularly oppressed them?

“That means they’re conversion was not genuine, and that it was opportunistic for their interests.”

(He literally says that.)
-Abu Hurayrah migrated to the Prophet after the battle of Khaybar?

“He was a coward who intentionally missed all of the battles alongside the Prophet.”

(Of course, he has a piss-poor analysis of AH’s history before Islam, which doesn’t account for anything in this regard).
-When Abu Hurayrah resided in the Prophet’s mosque, he hoped that he would be fed throughout his stay in Medina.

“Yes! It this proves that his entire companionship with the Prophet was for financial reasons!”
(Because God forbid that a homeless man who abandoned his lands to Medina would wish to be fed throughout his stay.)

Mahmud Abu Rayyah also “forgets” to mention that Abu Hurayrah actually was of honorable status among his tribe before Islam, according to some early historians.
-The Prophet sent Abu Hurayrah to Bahrain for the purpose of sadaqah/zakah collection with a larger delegation.

“The Prophet exiled Abu Hurayrah from Medina!!”
-The Muslim army at the battle of Mu’ta, which included Abu Hurayrah and other known companions, withdrew when it was outnumbered more than 10:1 by the Romans.

-“OMG! Abu Hurayrah was a coward!”
The author simply goes on and on with this kind of bullshit assessment of Abu Hurayrah’s life, where he desperately attempts to elicit self-righteous outrage towards Abu Hurayrah.

As he attempts to vindicate Abu Hurayrah, he has no problem citing countless lies & fabrications.
In fact, the entire title of his book was ripped off from a fabricated report that does not have an isnad; as I have stated in the past.

Mahmud Abu Rayyah is a disgusting and dishonest man whose book is a load of pseudo-intellectual bullshit.
I’m genuinely surprised at how this book received the attention it got in the previous century. Alas, it is an era where ignorance and stupidity seem to be the most valued commodities.
