okay this is my fine line ~analysis~ ; ..mainly just how i took the songs and what i think they meant.. part 1
golden:
golden, as niall would call it, is a sad song dressed as a happy one; which is clear by just listening to the lyrics. in this song, harry constantly belittles himself - whilst putting this other person on a pedestal. metaphorically he regards them as the sun, which on the
surface seems to be a compliment; the sun brings good weather, brightness, warmth - but it also burns.

the lyrics ‘i’m hopeless broken’ ‘take me back to the light’ ‘you wait for me in the sky’ all seem to suggest this person is far away, and while they’re far away (like the sun
) they brown his skin just right (a tan) which in moderation is a good thing. which i believe is hinting that this person is somebody he has to love from afar so he does not get burned (hurt).

also he feels rejected at the fact they can’t accept how ‘open’ he is, so he feels
conflicted because he wants to be himself and with them but doesn’t want to hide away and break their heart but he also doesn’t ‘wanna be alone’
watermelon sugar (ws):
ws is one big semantic field of summer imagery, ‘watermelon’ ‘berries’ ‘warm’ ‘summer’ etc. and is also a wholeheartedly upbeat song. lots of people regard this as a sexual song, which i’ll get to in a second. but for the most part it is shining a light on
an innocence of the relationship too, when you think sun, summer, berries and all that it feels pure, people long for summer because everything in their life feels easier and lighter.
now ‘breathe me in, breathe me out’ ‘i just wanna taste it’ seem like he just longs to be near
this person sexually of course but then also in a pure way ‘ i want your belly and that summer feeling’

everything about them makes him feel good and light, ‘like a summer evening’. and he doesn’t wanna ‘ever go without’.
adore you:
adore you, to me, gives the feeling of addiction in its purest form - he is addicted to this person, being near them and just everything about them, note the way he describes them so purely and so in depth at the beginning ‘your rainbow paradise’, ‘strawberry lipstick’
‘i get so lost inside your eyes’ - if this doesn’t scream the honeymoon period of a relationship i don’t know what does. he loves this person, he wants to spoil them with everything that he can give romantically, at this point he doesn’t even want them to love him back
necessarily, ‘you don’t have to say you love me, you don’t have to say nothing, you don’t have to say you’re mine.’ he just wants to be there for them, with them. he thinks so highly of this person he’d give his all for them ‘like it’s the only thing i’ll ever do’ and yet they
don’t have to do anything in return. he’d put his whole self on the line for them, ‘walk through fire you’ just so he can adore them. as pure as this song is *note* it as well is clustered with summer imagery - he also is letting himself be walked all over in a way, which is why
i think it is at the start of the album, because it is before his growth.
lights up:
lights up is where the self-love starts. and his journey of self-discovery and acceptance begins. as you can see, he begins to mistrust this other person ‘what do you mean “i’m sorry, by the way”’ and their apologies. which leads him to say he’s’never coming back down’
suggesting that his days of longing to be loved and letting people get away with anything are over, he’s never reducing himself like that again.

‘step into the light’ is where he puts himself on display and he doesn’t mind.
now i connect it to golden slightly (which may be
very incorrect but)
instead of chasing after the sun and getting burned, he is now merely just stepping into the light that the sun gives off. which can still be ‘so bright sometimes’ but he is ‘never going back’ to chasing after what’s not good for him.

i think lights up
perfectly portrays the beginning of anybody’s self-discovery - the part when you declare that you want it; you want to be free and feel like you’re on top of the world ‘never coming back down’ .
cherry:
cherry is one of the songs with the most pain on this album. the whole song is almost like a voicemail itself , him rambling to this person to get it all of his chest.
theyre ‘not talking lately’ this person is with somebody else and is already using the pet-name they
once used for only harry for somebody else.
it feels like, as i said earlier, he was chasing for something almost too good to be true. perhaps their relationship was never ‘official’ between them ‘you don’t have to say you love me’ < from adore you > but this person has
somebody else that they do love, and he feels dismissed that they could never love him like this person.

he misses them, the pain just from his screams later in the song alone shows just how raw the pain is.

also the song is addressed to ‘cherry’ his past nickname for them
whilst the chorus of the song he begs for them not to use their nickname for him on somebody else. he doesn’t want to let go to what once was.
falling:
this song is the complete antithesis to lights up. the person who once was ‘never coming back down’ now can’t stop themself ‘falling’.
he berates himself for his actions throughout , ‘there’s no one to blame but the drink and my wondering hands’
‘forget what i said’ ‘ i can’t take it back’ , this time he has done wrong.
also opposing lights up where he seems to have found himself, he is now asking himself ‘what am i now?’ suggesting he does not know who he is without the person he pushed away.
‘and i get the feeling that you’ll never need me again’
^ as seen in adore you, he would’ve done anything for them - which they clearly abused (seen in lights up) but this time he fucked up, and he’d do anything to back to being somebody they needed, even if that was it.
