This is awful news, and I feel for all of the staff affected. One of the highlights of my teaching is when I explore BuzzFeed. Yes, globally, the organisation has been a pioneer in using data analytics to understand their audience, but the UK team developed something *unique*. https://twitter.com/pressgazette/status/1260623868403896321
They have produced excellent investigative pieces, given much-needed exposure to social issues that legacy orgs. weren't paying attention to, and did it all while using a writing style that was more personal and relatable.
A number of students have told me that BuzzFeed acted as a gateway for their interest in politics. They tapped into internet culture and used it as a storytelling device for younger audiences. I still refer to Jamie Ross and the Solero saga in my lectures.
Personally, it's been one of my go-to sources for years. Reading their work was always easy. It was rigorous & incisive, but I always appreciated the distinctive voice. It really did feel like friends in a pub. This is a huge loss to journalism in the UK. https://twitter.com/aljwhite/status/1260658938443296768
