Food for thought for everyone working on their #UX or #design portfolios right now and looking for new gigs:

Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it is an attitude. It is is a tool you use to push through that fear, no matter how big or dark or murky it may be.

And in the job you have now — as well as whatever jobs you apply for in the future — that courage is something that must be on display: in your words, in your deeds, even in the case studies in your portfolio.

When I’ve done hiring, both for my own company and when I’ve helped clients staff their teams, my position has always been this:

I will take attitude over experience every day of the week.

Because attitude — part of which is courage —isn’t something that can be taught. It’s either there or it isn’t. And at the very least, a candidate needs to show the willingness to get there, to go there.

So as you work towards putting yourself out there, my advice is this:

If you’re going to sharpen any skill, sharpen your willingness to work through fear.
