Professor David Bayley passed away on Sunday at the age of 87. David was my mentor and he had a profound impact on my life. /1 https://www.mcpeekfuneralhome.com/obituary/David-Bayley
In 1992, I joined the PhD program in Criminal Justice at SUNY Albany. I was David's research assistant for his book POLICE FOR THE FUTURE. /2
I was a blue collar kid - a first-generation college student with a healthy dose of imposter syndrome long before I ever heard the term. /3
When I worked for David, he was busy traveling the world doing research and collecting data. To me, he was like a real life Indiana Jones. /4
David's major contributions to the study of policing and criminal justice are well known. His international research on the links between policing and political development were especially influential. /5
But David also had a major impact on his students. I am especially grateful for his contributions to my life and career. /6
Coming from humble roots, I had no real sense for what was possible. Working for David opened my eyes to possibilities I had never imagined. He opened up the world for me. /7
It is no mistake that I went on to build a career studying policing and violence all over the world. It is a direct result of studying under David Bayley. /8
The last time I saw David in person was in Queensland in 2014. He delivered an amazing talk on police reform in Australia. After his talk, we spent the day together taking a boat ride and exploring Brisbane. It was a fantastic day. /9
David had seen me give a talk at the event we attended. During our walk, he told me that I had been too self-deprecating. He said I undermined my own expertise and that I shouldn't be afraid to share my knowledge. /10
Seventeen years after receiving my PhD, he was still mentoring me. /11
Thank you, David, for helping me to find a path I never knew was possible. I will always be grateful to you for that, and I will continue to pay it forward. /12
And to David's family and loved ones, please know that he made a big difference in this world. I am so sorry for your loss. /13
