/8 As a fan of the show, it's been disappointing to see how #vanderpumprules has handled the homophobic pastor situation with Jax and Brittany. In advance of the finale and reunion I wanted to share my thoughts so here's a thread:
/8 If you don't watch here's the TLDR: 2 cast members( @mrjaxtaylor and @BNCartwright) got married& until weeks prior had enlisted homophobic and transphobic pastor Ryan Dotson to officiate. As outside pressure mounted they fired him and had @LanceBass step in. *chef's kiss*
/8 So they did the right thing - and it seems like much of the cast is eager for fans to forget about everything. Because Jax and Brittany are obviously not homophobes. How could they be? They're in a @BravoTV show and march in LA Pride every year! Jax has even worn glitter!
/8 Marching in LA Pride as a straight person is an expression of allyship. When Jax, Brittany, and the entire hetero cast (except our bi queens @ariana2525 & @dayna_kathan) attend Pride they are saying that they stand with us against the forces that seek to do us harm.
/8 And just to be clear, there is absolutely a correlation between tweets from a homophobic pastor and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation becoming law. I really hope that people who have Pride floats would know that... and understand why platforming someone with those beliefs is bad.
/8 oF c0uRsE iT's bAd! tHat'S wHy tHey FirEd hiM! And that's great! But demanding that the conversation ends there is a huge disservice to the queer community from people who represent themselves as allies.
/8 There is no such thing as a perfect ally. But there is an expectation of consistency and mindfulness - even when it's inconvenient. Also, I am a queer Christian. I was married in the church. One does not negate the other. I hate that it was framed that way on the show.
/8 Lastly, I hope @mrjaxtaylor + @BNCartwright learned from this experience and have made sure that their current pastor is LGBTQ+ affirming. Otherwise their allyship is performative & we really don't need them at Pride events. @churchclarity can help with confirming that.
