THREAD: 'vaping disease' or #Covid19?

Throughout 2019 there was a serious lung disease going around in the USA. Scientists still don't know the cause, but at the time it was attributed to vaping. They called it #EVALI. 1/7

@Quamasparagi
Symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath, chest tightness, gastrointestinal problems.
"Thousands had lung damage that needed treatment in hospitals, and several died from the condition", "support with a ventilator". 2/7
Ratio of males to females diagnosed with EVALI is about 7 to 3 (i.e. more males get it).
"By far the most common imaging pattern, organizing pneumonia is marked by bilateral ground-glass opacity".
(anyone who's seen covid-19 x-rays will know why I'm adding this detail) 3/7
"This is the first time I've seen systematic destruction of the lungs like this."
"Only a few cases of e-cigarette, or vaping, associated lung injury (EVALI) have been reported outside the USA (in Canada and Japan) and, so far [23 Oct 2019], none in Europe." 4/7
1 woman from Chicago, with "EVALI", travelled to Barcelona on Sept 2019, but don't know what happened as it's paywall.
In the US, 'EVALI' has almost disappeared since covid-19 emerged. 5/7
Also of note are the 'mysterious' pneumonia / respiratory outbreaks in two (unrelated between them) care homes in Virginia, US. (There might be more, haven't looked further.) CDC were unable to find the cause of them. 6/7
