Common criticism that Beatstars gets is that the characters are animals and how that's weird/unnecessary, which I disagree with heavily. In this thread I'll explain how it's incorporated into the story. If you see this criticism, just link them this thread. Anyway, let's start:
First off, let's start with how this dynamic between herbivores and carnivores is used in the story. Herbivores despise carnivores commonly because Carnivores only see Herbivores as food, while Carnivores commonly hate them for generalizing them/because they're weak.
This dynamic is brilliantly incorporated in each of the characters' character. Let's start with Legoshi and how it's ingrained into his character. Legoshi's internal conflicts mainly stem from his immense fear of losing control over his wild nature and letting his bloodlust take
over, resulting in him harming others. He doesn't misuse his power as to not be accused of being arrogant and because he doesn't see value in flexing his power. This basic premise of Legoshi ties back to the dynamic between Herbivores and Carnivores and how they hate each other.
As for Louis, the basic premise of his character and why he strives for greatness is because he wants to prove to all the wild beasts that even Herbivores can stand up for themselves. He hates his own weakness as a prey, and overworks himself, no matter what, to become
powerful enough to rival the carnivores. This ties back to the dynamic between the carnivores and herbivores. As for Haru, Haru has an abysmal self-esteem. She only thinks of herself as someone who's only fit to entertain other animals. She has no decent self esteem because
no one in her life ever looked at her as an equal. They always pitied her and had sympathy for her, but that's not what she needed. She needed honest compassion and respect. Animals have sympathy for her because of her size and powerlessness, which is due to her being a rabbit
This ties back excellently to the dynamic between herbivores and carnivores. This also applies to other characters like Juno and Bill, but I wanted to keep it as short as possible.
Overall, Beastars uses this dynamic to write the characters and create these compelling dynamics between them, as well as that this dynamic reflects our reality. In short, Beastars is an impeccable masterpiece tackles many themes such as self-worth and self-suppression :)
