A Thread: Graeme Ashley Hick

I've been doing some reading in the lockdown and wanted to get some stats off my chest. Enigma's always interest me and Hick was certainly one of those. He had a staggering career which fascinates me....
136 first class centuries, 40 list A centuries, 2 T20 centuries. Highest score 405*, 1000 runs before the end of May 1988. A giant of a batsman, 6ft 3, long reach, scores all round the ground.
Zimbabwe WC squad 1983, non playing member. Seven year qualification period for England. 57 FC centuries by the time of his test debut. More than Atherton, Stewart, Hussain managed in their whole FC career.
Unsure if it was FC but 309 for Zimbabwe vs Ireland aged 19 in 1985.
405* for Worcestershire vs Somerset May 1988.
172* vs West Indies for Worcestershire May 1988 - vs 3 of the 4 quicks he would face on debut 3 years later. Some monumental innings.
Test Debut - Leeds June 1991
c Dujon b Walsh 6
b Ambrose 6
Despite a match winning 86* in a Texaco Trophy game at Lords 10 days earlier, the expectation probably proved too much. 75 runs @ 10.71 in 4 tests.
1992 WC finalist. 83 in SF win v SA.
2nd youngest man to 100 FC 100s. 31st May 1998. Recalled to England side after two year absence. Plays final 2 tests vs SA at Notts and Leeds. Highest score 6 in 3 innings. 107 vs SL at the Oval get him on reserve list for the winters Ashes.
68 from 73 balls batting 7 at Perth and 60 from 82 balls at MCG in victory are highlights of 98/99 Ashes series defeat.
3 hundreds an a 50 in 4 innings in the ODI series vs Aus & SL. England make the 3 match final but lose 3-0
After Hick scores his final test hundred in May 2000 vs Zimbabwe he tours Pakistan and SL in 2000/01 averaging 12.60 from 5 tests.
In 2004 aged 39 he scored 1589 FC runs @ 63.56 his best aggregate since 1990.
He scored 79 FC centuries after his test debut. More than Kallis, Lara and Dravid scored in their entire FC careers.
Why he failed at Test Cricket has been debated and I will leave to your own mind, but for sheer run making there is no one player to have perplexed more in my lifetime than GA Hick.
