The agreement across the political spectrum that antisemitism is a “virus” or a “poison” to be eradicated isn't as useful as thinking of it as a “reservoir of readily available images and ideas that subsist in our political culture.” The former way of thinking, particularly on/
the left, has led to Labour’s antisemitism problem being seen as a ‘problem of antisemites’ rather than ‘a problem of antisemitism.' See: 2018 survey of Labour members, 66% didn't think party had a serious problem of antisemitism & 54% blamed accusations on political opponents/
who wanted to undermine Jeremy Corbyn or on the MSM – the 'weaponisation theory'. This way of thinking was cemented by the leadership and many of its advocates. Jeremy Corbyn deemed it a 0.1% problem in the membership, Jenny Formby used a figure of 0.06% suspended members as /
...a barometer for how marginal these views were. This isn’t credible, given all reported hate/race crime is the tip of iceberg. It’s “special pleading to think that Labour’s data are in some way different.’ Secondly, the weaponisation theory is a similar...
exercise in special pleading, as all political opponents seek to expose and attack the other side’s ethical weaknesses, it’s what the left do (or should do) with the Tory racism. Thirdly, a problem of antisemites not of antisemitism “forgets the antisemitism that recurs through
the history of British radicalism."

Some useful points about (often cherry-picked) stats and data about antisemitism in Britain. 30% of the UK population hold at least antisemitic opinion & is pretty evenly distributed across the political spectrum so again, the question is
“why in Labour has it risen to the surface?” A closer look at the data shows that when “Jews intersect... with some of the key issues the left care about" there are sometimes significant antisemitic attitudes.

On the other side, the demand for "zero tolerance" and focus on.../
...expulsions also has the effect of making it a problem of antisemites not antisemitism. Plenty of other key points in the article.
