A few people have asked, so thought I would put together a thread on how our operation plants potatoes.
Step 1-Potatoes are run through a cutting machine. The machine uses rollers to roll the potatoes into a line where they are then cut by large blades at the end of the machine
Step 2 - Any uncut or too large of potatoes are then manually cut after the machine by our awesome crew. Before heading into the seed treaters!
Step 3-In the treaters, fungicide is applied to protect the seed while it is in the ground from developing any disease. They are then loaded on a truck to be hauled out to the field. The coating has pine tree bark in it to help with coverage. Smells like a hike in the woods!
Step 4 - The freshly cut potatoes are then loaded into the planters from the truck!
Our planting setup is small and simple! We use smaller sized tractor to lessen compaction along with two 4 row planters. We also put down fertilizer in furrow as we are planting.
Step 5 - Planting! Our planters are called cup planters. The goal is to have one seed per cup, without any skips or doubles. As you can see this is pretty hard to achieve 100%, therefore we set it up to be as close as possible!
The cones spread the soil and seeds are placed in before they are covered back up with disk blades that make mounds. We plant a seed roughly every 8 inches so we produce seed, we want a higher quantity of small potatoes.
If you have any questions feel free to ask! I’ll do the best I can to answer them! Here we are planting side by side in the field!
