My undergraduate institution, which I just graduated from, sent out an email today announcing that they are cutting art history, music, math, English, international relations, and history as majors, but still claim to be a liberal arts university. Seriously?
I’m absolutely furious. The university regularly touts that it was founded on the basis of sharing knowledge and increasing global awareness in their students, as well as showing great pride in their international student population. Last year they cut all foreign languages.
I just earned degrees in museum studies and history. I deeply value the education I got at this university, which, at the time, ensured that students received a thorough and well-rounded education. I thrived in that environment. The worst thing is that I spent all of my time...
...within 4 of the 6 cut programs. Art history took me abroad for the first time. Music was my escape from the stressful aspects of my education. English and museum work are closely tied due to the skills required. History, of course, was my second major.
My protests and those of my fellow students will fall on deaf ears, as always. I wish the best to my former professors, who I am lucky enough to call my mentors and friends, and I hope that they will find a new institution that values them and their craft.
It breaks my heart that the institution I loved so dearly has betrayed my classmates, professors, and fellow alumni, using this pandemic as an excuse to do what they have been threatening for years now. I am hurt, I am angry, and I am tired.
