My grandpa was part of the first generation of high school graduates in his family. Although he earned a diploma, the school stopped in the 11th grade because it was a segregated school. There was no 12th grade.
My grandpa’s parents were born in the 1890s—his mother, 1898 and his father, 1890. His mom was 36 when she gave birth to him in 1934.
My grandpa’s grandparents were born enslaved and manumitted as children. His grandfather died long before he was born, but his grandmother helped raise him as a baby and died when he was a little boy.
