I think one of the biggest misunderstandings in regards to free speech is "I always have mean things said to me for being X".

You still have a right to be X, but you don't have a right for people to be happy about you being X, and sometimes they will voice that unhappiness.
This might be horrible comments, it might be valid criticism. You still have every right and ability to be X.

"Oh but the things they say make me not want to be X."

This sounds rough but you need to hear it,

That sounds like a "you" problem.
One thing that certainly will not make people happy with you being X, is if you advocate to take these peoples right to free speech away. They then associate this behaviour with people who are X.

It doesn't change their mind, in fact it makes them hate you more. Dont do this.
