The start of a new feature as we highlight the achievements of club players who have held or set club league records be they for records set in a season or the current club records. We are starting with the legend that is Jason Roberts. Talk to those that have seen him in his pomp
and they will tell you he is the best batsman this club has ever seen and his stats certainly back that claim. Jason holds the record for the highest individual league score by a Cogenhoe batsman and the most runs scored in a season by a Cogenhoe player.
Up to last season Jason had scored 8 569 runs in 354 games for the Cooks which includes 15 centuries.
His highest league score is 163 v Kettering Town III`s over at Kettering in 2009, he made it off 116 balls and it included 7 sixes and 24 fours.
Whilst that may be Jason`s highest league century there are many about that would say his 155 against the mighty United Social in 1991 was his best. It was against the best and most formidable of bowling attacks and helped Cogenhoe to be the only side to beat Social that season.
That year Cogenhoe finished as runners up to possibly the best team the Town League had ever seen. That Summer proved to be Jason`s best ever as he amassed 779 runs becoming the first player ever to top the 700 mark in the Town League, indeed he smashed the previous record of 657
which had been set by Derek Austin of Saints Crusaders.
Jason did not confine his powerful hitting to league cricket in 1991 and there are many over at New Bradwell who to this day remember his quite brilliant 181 not out in the Les Crisp Shield game on June 2nd an innings that
remains today as the highest ever score by a Cogenhoe player. In fact Jason holds the three best individual scores by a Cogenhoe batsman as in between that 181 and 163 sits a quite remarkable 170 against Old in the Garnett Cup in 1993. Now each innings in the Garnett Cup lasted
for 15 eight ball overs which in todays money is a T20 game. Jason played just 59 scoring strokes in his 170 absolutely stunning.
Perhaps more than his runs Jason is better known at Cogenhoe for his injuries, if you can pull it, strain it, break or sprain it Jason is your man and
had he have been fully fit over the past ten years then there is no doubt the records would have continued to be set. But a nicer guy you will struggle to meet and like all great players totally selfless and never one to talk about his achievements. Our club is lucky to have
Jason as a member and he is part of our history, indeed he has made an awful lot of it!
