“BEING RAISED IN A SEMI-TRADITIONAL CHINESE FAMILY IN THE PHILS” (a thread that no one asked for)
(Will keep this thread running so I can read back and be a better person in the future. probably. idk.)
PART 1: The Family Business. | my siblings and I admittedly are lucky when it comes to “the family business”. Most traditional parents today still expect the eldest son to take over the family business when they retire; but it’s not really the case for my family.
I mean sure, from time to time, my parents used to be more aggressive in asking my older brother to do it. But eventually when he found his own thing, and is currently succeeding in his field, my parents kind of stopped pursuing the idea.
But there is an unspoken expectation, still. I mean, it makes sense kasi pinaghirapan nila yung business. So I think they kinda expect one of us to go for it.
Tbh, I used to hate the idea of running it. Kasi naman..it’s so far from my interests. But going through years of being employed in my industry, and being waaay underpaid for the amount of work & dedication I had put in made me realize
that maybe working under someone else in F&B in this country was not for me. Idk where I read this “theory” but here’s what I currently believe:
To succeed in today’s “life”, you should have at least all of the ff: 1. A job where you feel confident & relaxed; 2. A job that earns you money; 3. A job that challenges you physically & mentally.
I believe you can combine 2 and 2 together...but it is nearly impossible to have a job that has all three aspects (i think). My previous job was definitely # 3, but mostly that job just brought me challenges (# 3) w/o the https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💰" title="Money bag" aria-label="Emoji: Money bag"> (# 2) nor the confidence (# 1)
When I resigned, I was mentally, physically and emotionally tired & broken. I was uninspired for a year. I was scared of moving forward because I didn’t know how and where to start. And then I read the aforementioned “theory”. And i realized
that everything was under my nose the whole time. I used to hypothetically slam the hypothetical door to our family business’ hypothetical face. I hated the idea. But now everything makes sense.
So i franchised a business which I believe falls under # 2. Our family business could fall under # 3 if I do decide to pursue it. All I need to find now is my # 1.
In conclusion: I’m not saying that u HAVE to end up with ur fam business. But you shouldn’t 100% immediately dismiss the idea of going for it. At the end of the day, it’s your life. You’re allowed to do whatever you decide to, even tho sometimes it feels like
you’re trapped in your parents’ life plans for you. If you 100% decide on not pursuing it, then be firm about your decision. Same goes with if you DO decide to go for it.
