This gave me actual chills.... https://twitter.com/geoffkeighley/status/1260587589280559104
I should add some dev reality context, just in case...
I personally LOVE Unreal and have been working with it for a while now, this is highly impressive and incredible for the future of how our games will be made and look.
BUT...!
This is a new version of an engine and transitioning is a BIG DEAL. The big question is what happens with people who want to migrate projects from 4 to 5 AND even then... this means a lot of new workflows and features to figure out and that takes time.
What an engine is capable of is one thing, how developers use it and adapt to it is another. With a lot of the art features, a lot of art pipelines will need to be reworked too, which costs time, money and effort. This demo is great, but it will take time for the industry.
So essentially: THIS IS AMAZING I AM SO EXCITED!

BUT... initial games coming out under this engine and on PS5 will NOT look like this. Demos are not games, it's beautiful but also highly curated and workflows need time to adapt to new tools, sometimes years.
Also important to note, aside from the pretty pictures, Epic changes their licensing model too which is pretty significant. No up-front cost and 5% royalty after the first million, waving royalty for sales on their store. That is honestly pretty huge, especially for indies.
I KNOW players continuously keep shitting on Epic but... I'm not exactly sure why? Epic has been an incredible ally for developers, has poured a lot of the money they make back into the industry in various ways and their pricing models are super fair.
I'm getting a lot of replies saying that it's about the inconvenience of multiple launchers and... sure, that's not super neat but... I'm just gonna say it. Maybe you're not a real gamer if a minor inconvenience like this means you want fewer games to be made for you to play.
SET MY MENTIONS ON FIRE! Woo! Feeling it today, folks!

Developers deserve all of the profits of their work, developing a storefront takes time, promote love between players and devs, and so on and so on! I’m feeling inspired today, I hope you do too.
Jenny out!
