Reading various opinions of non-applicants reacting to the below @MacMDAdmissions decision, I find it ~fascinating~ how many people clearly view a med school offer as validation of their hard work and abilities, rather than a process of coinciding privilege, luck, & work.🧵1/10 https://twitter.com/bobbyhristova/status/1259928371485642758
Everyone in medical school in Canada should have some degree of impostor syndrome - there are hundreds of people out there who would be as good or better doctors, who did not have the luck and/or privilege to get to an interview offer. 2/10
Being offered a spot based on a lottery from a narrowly selected group that got to the interview invite station based on the coinciding forces listed above shouldn't exacerbate that impostor syndrome. 3/10
What are my credentials for these opinions? What about the emotions of interviewees? I didn't get a single Canadian interview invite my first year of applying to med school (I didn’t expect to but was still devastated), and only got one Canadian invite the next year. 4/10
I did a year of med school in Ireland @UCC - an excellent experience that left me with some amazing friends, ++debt, & the knowledge that there are lots of amazing Canadians who will make great docs who were not offered spots in Canada. Also watched a lot of rugby! 5/10
I am someone with an extremely marginal CGPA from undergrad, an excellent CARS score & (??probably) a strong CaSPER. I was counting on the MMI to nudge me up the rankings - I love an interview! I would have found this devastating, & still would know that it's reasonably fair 6/10
The feelings applicants are having about this are valid - in this pandemic, feelings of grief, fear, & anger are common with the changes forced on us. Every day I’m working clinically, I feel painfully nostalgic for pre-pandemic medicine, learning, and patient interaction. 7/10
At least applicants who are not offered a spot are going to have an interview spot next year, though, which is far beyond what those who do not make it onto the wait list usually get. (This cat is the @MacMDAdmissions & @RA_Whyte admissions committee, probably) 8/10
To those who think they would've come up with a better way, I would love to hear it & then see good research following these cohorts. I'm passionate about equity in admissions & equity in #MedEd in general, which is why this is where my research is focused. 🤓 9/10
This pandemic is heart-breaking & exhausting, & if it can shake up some of the moribund traditions in #MedEd that perpetuate oppression & inequity then that’s a real silver lining to me. 10/10
