My wife and I visited with her parents yesterday, in town from Louisiana to visit for the first time since March. My wife, like me, supports Biden, but her parents & most of her extended family never talked politics much, and to the extent they ever mentioned anything in the (1/)
past it was mostly generic brief comment in support of a Republican, mostly on the prolife issue, occasionally 2nd Amendment, taxes, etc. but never any big discussions & never rants or conspiracy theories. Since Trump’s election they never really mentioned politics at all (2/)
which frankly we’ve been thankful for and happy to leave alone. So yesterday, my wife and I were eating dinner, kids playing outside, her mom on other side of the room talking with her dad, and my wife and I start talking about Fauci’s testimony yesterday. Just generic stuff (3/)
not really talking about Trump at all, just what he said about the next step in terms of health implications, safety measures, etc. So her mom comes over to join the conversation and we are wondering where this is going. And she says “you know I really like Dr. Fauci” (4/)
And before you know it she’s saying I can’t believe Trump did this & that & doesn’t he care about this & it’s all Fauci good Trump bad & we’re not even saying anything we’re just sitting there listening & smiling. My wife & I both basically just said yeah I know it’s bad.(5/)
Before long they had to go, so we really didn’t discuss the upcoming election, there will be time for that later. But it was a pleasant surprise, & hopefully sign of a turning point for others around the country. (6/)
One more thing…my mother-in-law’s name is Becky, so there may be hope for Beckys after all. (end)
