Classes that I (personally) believe should be required in high school:
- nutrition and exercise science so you know how to take care of your body
- metal, wood, and car shop to learn basic home and vehicle repairs
(1/?)
- practical finances, budgeting, and investing because i have known multiple adults who had a lot of credit card debt because they thought credit cards were free money they didn’t have to pay off. (I’m talking debt from shopping. Not college, home, or vehicle buying.)
(2/?)
- home ec because a lot of people don’t know how to cook, clean, or take care of other beings
- first aid and CPR for obvious reasons
- an actual comprehensive sex ed that includes safe sex, pregnancy, STIs, and LGBT
- survival skills
- mental health/stress management
(3/?)
Rather than teaching the same math, science, English senior year make it a transition year to prepare them for life after high school. Whether that’s the trades, entrepreneurship, college/university, the military, or just working.
(4/?)
High schoolers need a stronger foundation for adulthood. There are a lot of different paths to take after high school. Not just college. And it’s wrong to assume that everyone has a healthy home life where parents are preparing them.
