Kabul, Afghanistan UPDATE: At Dasht-e-Barchi Hospital, unknown attackers opened fire on our maternity ward - where pregnant women, mothers, and newborns were being cared for during one of the most precious and precarious stages of life.

The attack lasted for hours.
THREAD:
We are devastated by this senseless act of violence and mourn for those who have been killed & injured, including several patients. We have indications that at least one colleague was also killed.

We're making every effort to ensure medical & psychological care for survivors.
A glimmer of light in the darkness: in the middle of yesterday’s attack, one woman gave birth to her baby, and both are in good health.

For now, medical activities in the maternity ward are suspended, but not closed. Patients were evacuated to surrounding hospitals.
More than ever, MSF stands in solidarity with the Afghan people.

MSF opened the maternity ward in Dasht-e-Barchi in 2014. Since the beginning of 2020, we've delivered over 5,000 babies here.
