Two years ago, somebody dropped off a couple of young pigeons for us to rehab. We got them ready to leave our nest & introduced them to a local roost of pigeons. 1/?
Prior to leaving, they got very comfortable with us, which was unavoidable. Bonus chonky boy face! 2/?
Did I mention they got VERY comfortable with us? 3/?
Anyway, we felt good after getting them back out in the wild. Like any birb parent, we were worried that they might fall in with a bad crowd, pulling bird pranks (h/t @jeffcannata & @acarboni) & pooping on cars. Here's a picture of a Puerto Rican cousin to our birbs! 4/?
But wait, there's a fun twist! Here's a hint... 5/?
Just kidding! That was a cockatoo showing that no matter how fearsome dinosaurs might have been, they're just prank monsters who occasionally hate their dads and eat pizza now. This is Joe, a nearly 60 year old rescue Amazon Parrot who cusses way better than me. 6/?
But I digress. You may recall, pigeons used to be a part of our infrastructure. Humans raised them for food & used their homing instincts to communicate over long distances. They're so prevalent because *we* kept them around! Here, have some snowy not-pigeons. 7/?
So fast forward several months, and out of the blue, @kcmalec sends me this. 8/?
Oops! She didn't send me that, that's just an ominous picture I managed to snap off a pack of deer, freshly rested, on their way from their den to find weak prey to feast upon. Pretty metal, right? Here's what she actually sent. 8/?
Ahh! Sorry, I'm not good at tweeting I guess. That's @morghanite I caught looking very disapproving at my selfie technique. For real, this is what my wife sent me. 9/?
Could it be? Yes! It's almost certainly one of the baby birbs, all grown up & showing up for a hearty meal! Since then, both of our birbs have become regulars at our feeder. They get along well with the smaller birds & have even started bringing friend birbs. 10/?
Thanks for reading! The picture that prompted this came up in my memories today & I thought I'd share. I don't have a Soundcloud or anything, but if you enjoyed this thread, feel free to pass it along! It's my very first one! And during these rough times, just remember...
