Since the internet likes to spread around false info, I want to show you guys that this is not a baby crow. This is a baby Virginia rail. They are black and fuzzy as chicks, but lose their colour and become more of a brown colour as an adult.
Rails are similar to ducks and chickens in that their chicks are capable of walking not long after they are hatched. Since rails are not tree nesting birds, rail chicks need to be able to run away from predators. They are covered in soft downy feathers to keep them warm.
Crows on the other hand are tree-nesting birds and are a type of corvid. Their babies are hatched in a nest. They start out blind and bald, only having the strength to make a noise and hold their mouth out for food when they are hungry.
Another bird that gets mistaken as a "baby crow" is the black guillemot. This chick is black in appearance but is undoubtedly a seabird due to its webbed feet.
Both the rail and guillemot have significantly different beak shapes and sizes compared to a crow's. A rail has distinct beak patterns and has a narrow beak as an adult. It's used to catch small prey like beetles and frogs. A guillemot has a sharp narrow beak used to catch fish.
Crows have large, sharp beaks used to pull large carcasses apart, as they are carrion birds and scavengers. They will however prey on small animals and eat human food if given the opportunity.
This thread was just made for fun and me trying to educate people that that one pic of that baby rail is not a baby crow. I'm so tired to seeing that picture fjejdbf
