I wish I had done more documenting of my process through my YouTube journey. I know that making a video now is very different for me than it was when I started but it would be cool to see just HOW different.
I started out vlogging, so that process is pretty straight forward. You film what you’re doing and try to make it into a story. But then when I got into gear reviews and tutorials, things changed a lot.
There was a ton of planning and testing and it was not only more work to shoot, it was a lot to keep track of and edit. At first, it would all be one big shoot. I would plan what I could, shoot a-roll, shoot b-roll and whatever I got out of that was what the video became.
Now, it feels like a lot of back and forth. I’ll do any testing I need to, plan my script/outline, shoot my a-roll, edit my a-roll, watch the a-roll and make notes on where I need b-roll, shoot b-roll, edit in the b-roll, re-shoot anything that needs to be reshot or voicovered
And then finally start pulling up to the finish line on the edit. It’s funny how as I get better at this whole craft and get quicker at the process, I also get pickier and it takes more time and effort. It really makes me appreciate big productions a lot.
