I wanna’ talk about the music in Dragon Quest XI for a second! Since it released a few years ago, it was lambasted for being digitally synthesized and not orchestrated. To this day I still see people criticize the music specifically because of that (calling it MIDI as [cont]
though that’s an inherently bad thing). This really doesn’t make sense to me. So many video games feature digitally synthesized music, even games you think don’t! I refuse to believe for a second that people woke up one day and all collectively decided that digital tunes [cont]
should never be made again. I’m no audiophile, but even just a cursory listen doesn’t reveal anything low quality or troubled about the samples used. I feel like this was a mass misdiagnosis of middling music being incredibly repetitive over a huge span of time, but I find [cont]
it surprising that so many people maintain that it’s an objective fault, that the music is bad because objectively they did Bad Thing™️ and at that point... I just don’t get it? Their process was fine and ultimately the same process tons of composers use. [cont]
I don’t want to debate about this all day online, but am I crazy, or does it really seem like a middling soundtrack (deserving of that criticism) got lambasted for some vaguely technical thing so people could feel like they had a better point? So people could feel more correct?
Epilogue

Also fuck Koichi Sugiyama for being a shitty old man who denies war crimes that literally happened and myriad other things that only a man born in the 1930s could believe.
Epilogue 2

I also just want to put it out there that I'm absolutely NOT a sound guy! There's every chance I'm just... wrong, and I'm comfortable admitting that!
