Decentralization was a priority for us pre-COVID. We have a lot to improve still (and these aren't normal times), but I'm glad we started down this path last year by listening to our teams around the 🌎, learning from others and experimenting with changes to how we work. https://twitter.com/michaelmontano/status/1189184881978302465
Over the last couple years we started running lots of small experiments and documenting best practices.
Almost all our meetings are run off docs using silent read and comment to drive discussion. I've found this levels the playing field for participation and leads to more productive meetings.
Last year, the engineering leadership team, which was already distributed in several locations, broke up partipants in SF into multiple rooms to build empathy for distributed participants and start following better meeting etiquette and practices.
There are many other great examples of our teams making changes to how they work before COVID and in these times. Still, it feels like we've copy pasted too much of how we worked in centralized offices to the fully distributed situation we're in today.
It's important for distributed teams to be intentional about scheduling synchronous time to build social connection, but we need to learn how to work more asynchronously.
And, again, these aren't normal times. The most important thing our teams can do is take care of themselves, their people and each other. How we work is something that we will continue to experiment with and evolve both during this time and beyond.
