The number of Covid-19 deaths in Scotland fell in all settings in the week to 10 May.

But the proportion of people dying in care homes remains stubbornly high at 57% of Scottish deaths last week & only slightly down from 60% a week earlier.

Hospital deaths = 37% last week

The number deaths in Scottish care homes stood at 238 in the week ending 10 May, down from 314 the previous week and far below the peak of 340 deaths in care homes in the week to 26 April.

There were more care home deaths than hospital deaths for the third week running

The most recent equivalent data for England and Wales only runs to 1 May making it difficult to directly compare the data north and south of the border.

But up to 1 May, more Covid-19 deaths had occurred in hospitals than in care homes in England and Wales every week.

Sturgeon said she was confident that the Scottish numbers were accurate, and that the figures were “broadly in line with evidence seen from other countries.

She said: “This tells us there is a particular issue here that is not unique to Scotland...this is an intrinsic part of the really difficult nature of this virus”.
