70 years ago today, Steveland Morris "Little Stevie Wonder" Judkins was born. Musically, Ronnie White of The Miracles was credited w/ his discovery. Berry was very reluctant to sign a child act, due to education, parental consent, & touring challenges
As several of his early hits, "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" was written f/ Wonder by Sylvia Moy & Hank Cosby (& in some cases Mickey Stevenson). It was covered by Bill Cosby (no relation) as "Little Ole Man". Moy asked Gordy if she could write on him after his voice changed
The label was prone to drop the mid-teen Wonder, who was then too large to be a cute novelty act. The driving backbeat of "Uptight" was Stevie's idea, borrowed from The Stones' "Satisfaction". Moy didn't have access to write the lyrics in Braille- she sang them to him
The result transformed & prolonged Wonder's career past the "Little" phase. He was listed as "Stevie Wonder" on the .45, the "Little" having been dropped. He began performing in public w/o his harmonica or bongos:
On the more plaintive "Hey Love", 17 y.o. Stevie is the fourth writer credited. It was the first tune he is credited on, to hit:
Stevie, Hank & Sylvia wrote "My Cherie Amour". It was the first of Stevie's "visually poetic" tunes to chart well
On 1967's "I Was Made To Love Her", Stevie, his mom, Sylvia & Hank were credited. Its storytelling element presaged "Songs In The Key Of Life" era Stevie (by nearly a decade)
