Today we are talking about the oldest & the largest sun temple, The Martand sun temple in J&K, built by the 3rd ruler of the Karkota Dynasty, Lalitaditya in the 8th century CE. The Martand temple was built on top of a plateau from where one can view whole of
the Kashmir Valley. From the ruins and related archaeological findings, it can be said it was an excellent specimen of Kashmiri architecture, which had blended the Gandharan, Gupta, Chinese, Roman, Syrian-Byzantine and Greek forms of architecture.
In the sanctum where diety sun seated, there was a yantra from which sun light enters and remains whole day in each part of the temple. There was 365 wall cravings on the wall around the temple. The temple was destroyed on the order of sultan sikandar Butshikan,
As part of his efforts to forcibly convert Kashmiri people to Islam.
