The last two financial crises affected defense spending in Asia in very different ways.

The 1997 crisis prompted an extended downturn in defense spending. It took six years to grow above 1997 levels. The 2008 crisis suspended what had been a rapid period of growth. But only briefly. Asian defense budgets returned to growth by 2010.
