Every now and again Zim football fans resuscitate the Big Question, “Who the GOAT, Peter or Chunga”? Here I argue why Chunga is not. @MoeChanda @TinoChinyoka
Unless you lived in Harare and frequented Rufaro stadium, you only heard about Chunga on the radio. Few may have seen some grainy highlights of him on ZTV. @chukulaz @nigelchanakira
So there’s only a handful of people who can vouch for Chunga’s greatness. At best his legendary status is hearsay passed from one old Dynamos fan to another, passed from Dynamos journalists to the gullible fans in Mutare, Gweru, Kwekwe, Masvingo. @Jubhamba @katsande_edmore
To show the power of the corrupt media, people who have never seen Chunga play are among some of his vociferous admirers. They were told that he was a great player. @Chofamba @HumbaWasu
The man was helped by the fact that he played for the most supported and politically powerful team in the land therefore his ability was grossly exaggerated. Anything Dynamos wanted, Dynamos got, including cheating Blackpool out of the league title in 1994. @mlevu28 @Mathuthu
The only way to measure his so called greatness is to judge his and other so called great footballers from Dynamos by their stints in Europe and South Africa. Has an ex Dynamos player excelled in SA or in Europe? @TheZidlekhaya @sekuru_gudo
Chunga had a trial at Nottingham Forest and Brian Clough rejected him allegedly for failing to follow instructions. Coventry City has one look at Peter Ndlovu and signed him as an 18 year old. @Shumblex @sikunkhoma
Chunga then found himself in the backwaters of European football. During his time there his team E Aalst toiled in the Belgian second tier and was only promoted to the top tier a few years after Chunga returned to Dynamos. @tivag24
Playing in from of a capacity home crown of less than 5,000 fans Chunga managed to score a few goals in 4 seasons there. I sent an email to E Aalst requesting Chunga’s stats ie goals and assists. Many will be disappointed. @mehlulisizwe
In the old days of no internet Dynamos fans spread fake news about Chunga’s exploits in Belgium. One such was that he scored a hatrick with 10 minutes of coming in a a sub. Of course that never happened. @closetmc @DembareTv
But the big red flag on Chunga for those who’ve not seen him play should be, his failure to attract interest from top clubs in Belgium and Europe. @sharuko @charlemabika
While Chunga was labouring in the Belgian second division, his age mates from other African players were performing in the best leagues, arenas and competitions. @capsunitedfczw
Kalusha Bwalya was at PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands having started of at Cercle Brugge in the Belgian top flight, George Weah was starting his European adventure at Monaco before going to PSG, AC Milan, Chelsea and Man City. @shumbamutasa
Abedi Pele was at Marseille but had started of at a French regional club. If Chunga was as great as his fans claim a bigger and better European club would have bought him. Or at least he would have gone to a better league. @shumbamutasa
That’s what happens to good players. Tino Kadewere made his European debut for a Swedish club before moving Ligue 2 in France and was in the last transfer window bought by Ligue 1 team and Champions League participants, Lyon. Imagine if he was an ex Dynamos! @hararecityfc
To illustrate how Dynamos players are overrated by their fans and the Zim media you only need to take them away from Rufaro and let them play in the South African or European leagues. @TinoChinyoka
Take Tauya Mrehwa, a reincarnation of Chunga in terms of exaggerated ability. Fresh from being crowned Soccer Star of the year in 1995, he failed to make the grade at lowly Scottish side Hibernian. Three years later he tried his luck in SA and played there for six seasons.
In 2015 Kickoff magazine rated him as the 15th best foreign striker in the SA league. If that list had included SA players Mrehwa would not have made top 50. @larry_moyo
Now compare with Benjani’s record in South Africa, Season Top Goal Scorer, Players’ Player of the Year, Football Writers Player of the Year. Imagine if he was an ex Dynamos player. @HighlanderBosso
Memory Mucherahowa the 1994 Soccer star of the year lasted a few months in Belgium. Contrast with Marvelous Nakamba. Started in French second tier, went to Dutch top tier, then Belgian top tier and now in the English Premier league @Mathuthu
A few more fans may have witnessed Chunga second coming, when he returned to Dynamos from Belgium. His return coincide with the ascendancy of Fabisch’s Dream Team. Dynamos fans clamoured for Chunga to be included in the team.
An unconvinced Fabisch was forced to arrange a midweek “trial” for Chunga in a match between the Warriors and a Premier League Select. The whole stadium momentarily deserted the Dream Team voice it’s boisterous support for Chunga. @Gazzaman14
After Rahman Gumbo and later on Norman Mapeza had shut out Chunga forcing him to be substituted and vindicating Fabisch, Dynamos fans went berserk. They threatened Fabisch, Gumbo and Mapeza. That’s why Norman Mapeza probably Zimbabwe’s second best player after Peter Ndlovu..
...having starred for Galatasary and played against Romario and Koeman of Barcelona in the Champions League is erased from conversations about excellent players. @Gazzaman14
Now go on YouTube watch Chunga, Kadewere, Musona and Billiat videos and rate them. If you’re objective Chunga will occupy 4th place.
Chunga was a good player, just not a great player. In that Dynamos team of the mid 1980’s Kenneth Jere was better and in that era Stix Mtizwa was the best and Peter Ndlovu is the GOAT🐐 @mimmitwit
