I‘m directing a grad program (tho MA, but many are looking into PhDs) next year & will be collating thoughts, but my main point now is that programs need to normalize the fact that funded grad study can be a valid stopgap measure. The academics who went in for „the calling“ need to realize that many people are going into grad programs for all sorts of other needs, but there isn’t much space to talk about them openly, b/c „the calling“ (or „alt ac“) is still such a privileged narrative, despite everything.
