I get people worrying about safety for people returning to work/school, but you need to understand the lockdown was never (and could never) eliminate the virus.
That only comes from herd immunity.
Now you achieve this two ways:
1- a vaccine.
2- people catching the virus....

So, vaccine!
Well no, certainly not this year, and maybe not even next (unless we’re very lucky).
It’s not going to happen, despite what the media say,; you’ve got at LEAST 12-18 months to wait for that assuming best case.
Long term- yes, absolutely. Now, no....

Where does that leave us?
Controlled exposure, at levels that doesn’t overwhelm the NHS.
Get people to catch, fight, and then generate antibodies against it. This should protect them for at least a few years, worst case, or at least lessen the severity of subsequent cases...

This means people WILL die.
Unfortunately this is unavoidable, whatever flavour government you prefer.
They either die now, or later on.
The only alternative is full lockdown until vaccine is made and out there- so effectively a two year lockdown.
This isn’t possible.

So, circling back to the point of this thread: school openings.
This disease doesn’t seem to affect kids. We can, should, and are going to exploit that.
Ironically we don’t WANT the schools to be 100% safe, as kids make the perfect vector to spread the virus slowly....

And I say this as a parent.
The risk to our kids is negligeable.
Opening schools is good for them, but also allows us to slowly increase infected numbers in a more controlled way.
Long term most of us are going to have to catch this. May as well start now.
