I think the thing to recognize about ethno-nationalist conservatives like @rr_reno is that they draw on a very old, exclusionary lineage.

Take Reno's call for a new conservative fusionism, in which he makes this statement:

That obsession with the blurring of national, social, and sexual boundaries is familiar to historians of the mid-20th century. It was a rallying cry of religious opposition to desegregation.

God made boundaries to divide the nations and races; who were mere men to dissolve them?
Take this example, a sermon by evangelist Bob Jones Sr, founder of an eponymous university that had segregationist student conduct policies in place until the 2000s.

Do you recognize the same logic as Reno is using nearly sixty years later?

I've written about this sermon at some length before, but suffice it to say that Christians arguing that there is a divine mandate for national peoples to remain unmixed & races to remain unmiscegenated is not novel.

It is also deeply anti-Christian, partaking more of the spirit of anti-Christ than of anything from Christ himself. Thus Jones' warping a verse (Acts 17:26) that very clearly teaches the essential unity of humanity into a verse justifying exclusion, division, and hatred.
For Reno, that means twisting the definition of human freedom to its opposite. Freedom is static; freedom means believing and doing like I do, staying where I want you to stay. Freedom means using the State to make society look like it did...in the 1950s. Jones would approve.
What Reno (and Jones) do is take advantage of a basic human impulse to sacralize our intuition. A segregated society simply *felt* right & proper to Bob Jones Sr, so he went looking for scriptural justification for his (racist) priors.
And the Christian reactionaries like Reno/Vermeule/Ahmari have a visceral problem with modernity. Trans folks weird them out, poor immigrants are alienating, and capitalism strikes them as unfair b/c it rewards those outside of their tribe.

It's a worldview built on disgust.
