I would strongly urge everyone to watch #Hospital on iPlayer. This is the hospital my sister works at (as a nurse on the covid drug trials in episode 2), and the show illustrates what she and her colleagues have been going through during this pandemic. 1/7 https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000j49t/hospital-coronavirus-special-episode-1
It can be easy to sit in our bubble and admire the NHS heroes. My sister is and has always been my hero, but she is also a highly trained specialist who is employed in a job that has its risks but is meant to come with certain protections. 2/7
This doc shows that she and her colleagues are being badly let down by their employers, this Conservative government, who have consistently failed in their specific response to the pandemic and in years of NHS underfunding that has made this crisis worse than it needed to be. 3/7
They have failed to adequately protect the physical and mental wellbeing of the staff on the front lines, and they hide behind the rhetoric of NHS heroism and sacrifice as if that makes it okay. Where has this appreciation been for the last decade? 4/7
None of this is new, but it feels more relevant than ever on this week of all weeks, when it has been decided that a round of golf or a game of tennis takes precedence over the safety of NHS staff (and of course, the population at large). 5/7
I am so proud of the contribution that my sister is making to finding treatments for this disease. But I am also very scared and very angry about what she and her colleagues are having to face. 6/7
So please watch this. Please stay at home. And please hold this government to account for what they have done. 7/7
