I've ventured outside of my home this morning to minimize contact with a plumber. Successfully found wifi to attempt to work, on my fourth parking lot atttempt. Turns out wifi is not all you need to work sucessfully. 1/
Turns out that a car is not a comfortable place to use a laptop. At all. (Zoom calls on a phone aren't all bad, though!) 2/
Sitting outside on a bench isn't an option, as it is 50 degrees and raining. I should point out that I have a small SUV, and am the only person in it. I can't imagine that's the case for most students trying to work on public wifi in parking lots. 3/
Moral of this thread is that wifi and a laptop are not the only supports that students need to study remotely. Students also need an environment conducive to learning. At a BARE minimum, that environment needs to be comfortable (phsyically and mentally) and safe. 4/
We have so much more to consider to help out students who are struggling to continue schooling.
