Something you almost never hear/read, but is nevertheless true: the average UK worker pays less tax on their wages than workers anywhere else in Europe (with the sole exception of Switzerland)
The Right doesn't like this, because they prefer the populist myth that the average person is over-taxed.

The Left doesn't like this, because they prefer the populist myth that we can achieve Continental levels of public services without Continental levels of taxation.
But we'd have a better and more honest public discourse around tax if we started by acknowledging how things actually are.
