In January, the @CIJ_ICJ
unanimously
directed #Myanmar to prevent genocide against the #Rohingya
and preserve evidence + asked for an update on May 25. The clock
is ticking. https://bit.ly/3fJEAmT /2

and preserve evidence + asked for an update on May 25. The clock

In April, the government issued directives to prevent genocide & hate speech and preserve evidence. But are these efforts nearly enough? (Spoiler alert: NO). My take: https://bit.ly/2yT9mZN /3
The threats against the #Rohingya remain insidious. Facebook recently
removed posts
that linked Myanmar’s police force to a disinformation campaign, including posts that spread hate speech about the Rohingya. https://bit.ly/3fEmRxf /4

And while the freeing of 800 Rohingya prisoners who were jailed for trying to flee the horrible conditions in Rakhine State grabbed headlines
, they never should have been jailed, and now they’re being returned to the situation they tried to escape. https://bit.ly/3dH3p0Q /5

There's SO much more the government could do to protect the Rohingya and show real compliance with the @ICJ’s order, even with the looming threat of Covid-19. Some ideas

In central Rakhine State, about 130,000 Muslims, mostly Rohingya, have been imprisoned in open-air detention camps since 2012 with very restricted access to healthcare.
What has the government done to lift these restrictions? https://bit.ly/2WuI9G6 /7

The government has “closed” some of these camps, but really just built permanent structures in the current camp locations, further entrenching the Rohingya's segregation.
Has the government consulted with these communities to find durable solutions? https://bit.ly/3btuHWU /8

Has the government taken any steps to repeal the laws that isolate the Rohingya and legitimize their discrimination, including the 1982 Citizenship Law which laid the cornerstone for policies to strip the Rohingya of their citizenship? https://bit.ly/35X0FKf /9
The government has instituted the National Verification Card (NVC) system, which legitimizes the Rohingya’s status as non-citizens & has been imposed through threats and coercion.
What steps has the government taken to halt
the NVC process? https://bit.ly/2zBLzxr /10

The government has restricted
humanitarian + internet access in half of Rakhine’s townships in response to the Arakan Army conflict.
How is the military protecting civilians from fighting so that life-saving aid can reach vulnerable populations? https://bit.ly/3dHlH2e /11

The point is that #UNSC members should use the briefing with the UN's Myanmar envoy to stress the need for justice
& ask pointed questions about Myanmar’s compliance with the @CIJ_ICJ's order. @UKUN_NewYork /12

The Rohingya in Rakhine State need the #UNSC to keep the pressure on #Myanmar and send a message that the world is watching. END
